  • "We joined a sakarun beach tour from Zadar and the water clarity exceeded every expectation. The sand stays white and fine even in shallow areas, and the pine shade at the edge made it easy to spend the whole afternoon. Bring water shoes if you plan to explore the rocky sections at either end."
    Marina K. · Croatia · 2026-07-12
  • "Sakarun is easily the most beautiful beach on the island. The turquoise gradient in the morning light is something you normally only see in the Caribbean. We arrived by rental boat around 10 AM and had plenty of space to anchor offshore."
    Thomas B. · Germany · 2026-06-28
  • "The bay is protected from wind and waves, so even when the Adriatic was choppy elsewhere the water here stayed calm. Perfect for floating and swimming without any current. The forest behind the beach provided welcome shade by early afternoon."
    Elena R. · Spain · 2026-05-19
  • "Sakarun beach tours bring groups throughout the day, so it does fill up by midday in August. The water and sand are genuinely stunning, but if you want solitude come early or late. We stayed until sunset and had the place nearly to ourselves."
    Jason L. · United States · 2026-08-03
  • "Reaching Sakarun takes effort but the reward is immediate. The contrast between the white sand and that impossible blue water is something photographs struggle to capture. We spent four hours here and it felt like half that."
    Lukas M. · Netherlands · 2026-07-22
  • "Visited in mid-April when the island was still quiet. Sakarun Beach was nearly deserted, water cold but swimmable, and the pine forest was fragrant. A sakarun beach tour is the easiest way to reach it if you are staying in Zadar without a car."
    Chiara F. · Italy · 2026-04-14
  • "The bay curves gently and the seabed stays sandy for at least 50 meters out. No rocks, no seaweed, just clean turquoise water. We saw families with young children wading safely in the shallows all afternoon."
    Oliver H. · United Kingdom · 2026-06-05
  • "Sakarun delivers exactly what the photos promise. The sand is soft, the water temperature in August was perfect, and the backdrop of green hills makes the whole scene feel complete. Arrive before 11 AM to claim a good spot under the pines."
    Nina S. · Austria · 2026-08-10
  • "We sailed down the Adriatic for two weeks and Sakarun was the highlight. The water is so clear you can see your toes in chest-deep sections, and the bay stays sheltered even when the wind picks up. Anchor offshore or take a sakarun beach tour to avoid the rough access road."
    David P. · Australia · 2026-07-17
  • "The beach itself is spectacular, no question. But in peak summer the number of tour boats and rental cars means you are never alone. Water quality and scenery are still top-tier, just manage your expectations about tranquility in July and August."

Sakarun Beach Tour on Dugi Otok
About

Sakarun Beach Tour on Dugi Otok

Sakarun sits at the northwestern tip of Dugi Otok, eleven nautical miles from Zadar, where a shallow bay curves between limestone headlands and holds a rare band of white sand. The beach stretches 800 metres along the cove, backed by low dunes and juniper scrub rather than development.

The sand is not coral but crushed shell and calcite, transported by longshore drift over millennia, and the seabed slopes so gently that wading thirty metres out leaves the water chest-high. The name Sakarun derives from the Latin saccharum — sugar — a reference to the pale grain that sets this shore apart from the darker pebble beaches common to the Dalmatian coast.

Dugi Otok itself has been sparsely inhabited since Illyrian settlement, later garrisoned by Rome and then absorbed into the medieval Venetian defensive perimeter. The island's population peaked at 4,200 in the early twentieth century and has since declined to fewer than 1,700, concentrated in the southeastern villages of Sali and Božava. Sakarun remained inaccessible by paved road until 2003, when a narrow asphalt route connected the beach to Božava, seven kilometres inland. Before that, visitors arrived by foot or fishing boat.

Today, the Sakarun beach tour from Zadar operates as a seasonal half-day or full-day excursion, typically departing between 09:00 and 10:00 and returning by late afternoon. Most boat tours follow the outer coast of Dugi Otok, passing the Telašćica Nature Park cliffs and anchoring at Sakarun for a swim stop of two to three hours. Some itineraries combine the beach with a visit to the Veli Rat lighthouse, built in 1849 and still operational, or a detour to the saltwater Lake Mir within Telašćica.

The beach remains undeveloped apart from a seasonal café and a stand of pine planted in the 1970s to stabilize the dunes. There are no permanent structures, no lifeguard station, and no artificial shade beyond the trees. The absence of infrastructure is deliberate: Sakarun falls within a protected landscape zone under Croatian coastal law, which prohibits construction within 100 metres of the high-tide line. The result is a shore that appears much as it did in the 1960s, when the first organized boat trips began arriving from the mainland, carrying day-trippers in wooden trabakuls rather than fiberglass speedboats.

"The seabed slopes so gently that wading thirty metres out leaves the water chest-high."

What a Sakarun Beach tour day looks like

A step-by-step walkthrough of Sakarun Beach tickets — what you'll see, how long each stage takes, and the details that matter.

You board the boat at Zadar's passenger pier shortly after sunrise, when the Adriatic is flat and the air still cool. The crossing takes 45 minutes at cruising speed, the bow cutting a white wake across open water as the limestone ridges of Dugi Otok sharpen on the horizon.

The captain throttles down as the boat rounds the northern headland, and Sakarun appears suddenly — a pale crescent framed by green hills, the shallows glowing turquoise against the darker offshore blue.

You step onto the sand in ankle-deep water, no dock or gangway required. The beach is wide and nearly flat, the sand fine enough to compact underfoot but coarse enough not to cling. You walk toward the tree line and claim a patch of shade beneath the pines, spreading a towel on ground that is half sand, half fallen needle. The water stays warm and shallow for thirty metres out, clear enough to watch minnows dart over the rippled bottom. Some visitors wade to the rocky point at the southern end, where the bay opens to deeper water and the current picks up.

By midday the beach holds a few dozen people, scattered widely enough that it never feels crowded. A small café near the trees serves cold drinks and grilled fish, but most bring their own provisions. You return to the boat in early afternoon, salt-dried and sun-tired, and the crossing back to Zadar passes in a drowsy haze.
